چکیده

Methods Compiling data throughout the region and nationally, we considered two spatially based quantitative measures of endemism (relative range restriction): weighted endemism (WE) and corrected weighted endemism (CWE). In both measures, species are weighted by the proportion of their ranges found within the analysis window, with the ranges calculated as the total number of cells in which they occur (10 km 9 10 km in this research). We also derived a novel expectation for the contribution of each species to the endemism scores at each taxonomic level based on the additive properties of the metrics and their relationship to species richness. We used this expectation to assess the proportional contribution of each genus to the endemism scores.

Are We Losing the Best Parts of Our Protected Areas in Tropical Mountains?

Protected areas (PAs) on tropical mountains undergo greater forest destruction in their lower altitudes. We compared the extent of forested, nonforested, and fragmented areas between lowland (o 1000 m asl) and montane zones of the Blue Mountains inside the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park established in Jamaica in 1993. We found that in 2008, inside the montane zone, only 4 percent of...

Integrating science into management of ecosystems in the Greater Blue Mountains.

Effective management of large protected conservation areas is challenged by political, institutional and environmental complexity and inconsistency. Knowledge generation and its uptake into management are crucial to address these challenges. We reflect on practice at the interface between science and management of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area (GBMWHA), which covers approximate...

Environmental and Anthropogenic Pressures on Geophytes of Iran and the Possible Protection Strategies: A Review

Ornamental geophytes (ornamental flower bulbs) are international and national heritage considering their contribution to people's life quality around the world. Iranian habitats support about 8000 species of flowering plants (belonging to 167 families and 100 genera) of which almost 1700 are endemic. Iran is a rich country in terms of distribution of bulbous plants. More than 200 species of bul...

Water quality of road runoff in the Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia

The Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia is a populated area that includes a world heritage listed area. There is concern about the impact on the national parks of the pollution that may result from stormwater runoff from the roads in the area. A rainfall simulation experiment was undertaken on two areas with paved and unpaved road segments. Water quality parameters were examined, inclu...
